Flying between Land's End Airport and
St. Mary's Airport, Isles of Scilly
Booking In/Out
1. Both Lands End and St.Mary’s are strictly PPR by telephone. Ring prior to your departure to obtain permission, pass relevant flight details and be briefed on weather and arrival procedures.
2. As the Isles of Scilly are more than 10 miles from the mainland you are advised to file a flight plan if you are flying to or from St.Mary’s. If you fly from Lands End to St.Mary’s, and do not wish to file a plan we suggest that you put your supplementary flight information on the form attached to the end of this brief and leave it with ATC Lands End or at the reception desk in the terminal.
Fuel
1. Aviation fuel is not available at St.Mary’s but Lands End has both Avgas and Avtur. Although it is very unlikely that we are unable to supply fuel, please check prior to your flight. It is better to stop here before going to the Islands rather than on your return journey just in case the weather here deteriorates. Oil is available at the GA reception desk (in the Skybus passenger terminal).
2. The Avtur bowser is parked by the hangar and refuelling is carried out on the concrete apron only. It helps us if you give us as much notice as possible for an Avtur refuel. You might have to wait for a short while if the ground staff are handling one of our scheduled passenger aircraft.
3. The self-service Avgas pump is by the base of the control tower and instructions are displayed on the pump.
Life Jackets
We have a limited number of life jackets available for short term hire but we strongly advise you to bring your own as we cannot guarantee availability.
Useful stuff for us when booking in or out on the telephone!
1. Callsign and Aircraft type - does your aircraft have BARS?
2. POB (because we care!)
3. ETAs here and / or St.Mary’s
4. DME / GPS equipped? (helps us to select the transfer point)
5. Your planned crossing level.
6. Have you landed here or at St.Mary’s before? (so that we can give any advice
that might help)
7. How long are you staying (helps us to plan parking )
8. Are you refuelling? Avgas / Avtur ?
Don't forget your HI-VIS jacket or vest – a must airside!
The Land's End Transit Corridor
1. Lands End and St.Mary’s ATC share the responsibility for the corridor and co-ordinate the traffic between one another. The radio transfer point between Lands End and St.Mary’s is:
a) VOR/DME - 10 DME from the LND VOR/DME
b) GPS - 18nm from St.Mary’s
c) Visual Reference - Abeam Wolf Rock lighthouse on the S boundary
2. The eastern Corridor boundary runs from St.Ives to Penzance – call Lands End before entering.
3. The Corridor can be a busy piece of airspace. It is not Controlled Airspace but we try to maintain a safe combination of vertical and horizontal separation between known aircraft within it. Commercial fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters are allocated levels from 500ft to3500ft amsl. It helps if you can fit in with this pattern as requested by ATC.
4. The upper limit of the corridor is 4000ft. If you prefer to make your crossing above this, you may be transferred to either Culdrose or Newquay for a radar service.
5. As soon as you have set course please give your ETA to the ATCO so that it can be passed by Lands End ATC to St. Mary’s or vice versa.
